yes, 6/10. If we realistically want to go to Franny's we better move the time up to 6:30. They open the bar at 5 and the restaurant at 5:30. Actually I think 6:30 is a little late.

I'll post a list later this weekend but in the meantime, anyone who's interested can post here.

I'm flexible on that night, so I could make it there as early as 5 P.M. if that's what works best.

 Well, if you guys go on a Friday night, and on Friday night you have to go at opening, that means you'll be done by the time I can make it there! I work M-F from 11am-7pm.

Seriously, they don't even take reservations for big groups?

I just called my sister. She'll be in the outer banks for her b-day so I'm free the 11th for dinner - would that work for anyone?

Oh, and hey DanaT - I posted because you PM'd!

Saturday nights for dinner are possible for me, though since I work from 9-3 in Brooklyn College, we're talking about going back to Brooklyn again for dinner. So if it's possible, I'd rather avoid Saturdays, at least in June.

Somebody mentioned Peperoncino on 5th Ave. and St. Marks Pl. upthread...

...while I enjoy their pizza, I must warn you all to NOT order the mixed meat and cheese plate appetizer, unless of course you're in the mood for a few microscopic slivers of cheese (one variety, not assorted in the slightest) atop a huge pile of crap ham studded with slices of pimento loaf.

Oh, and the service was incredibly bad.

bergerka we'd love you to join us. the 10th isn't set in stone. peter why don't you join us?

I could do the 11th too, actually I think it would be a nicer night to go. We could get there at 5 have some drinks, eat some good pizza and be home at a reasonable hour to start the work week again.

Jen, I didn't push them on the no reservations policy just asked them what was what. I'm really glad I pmed you. it would be great for you to join us.

Dana, this sounds like fun. At this point, I am going to suggest that we don't aim for Franny's and hold off until another time. It really is a very small place, and it may realistically be above some budgets. With places that small (Fornino as well) we really need to set something up in advance -- although if only six people are going this time, that's a different story. I hope to arrange a pizza demonstration for us at Franny's some time in the future.

In the meanwhile, there are a number of very interesting places we haven't tried yet that should have less trouble accommodating the group. Luzzo's sounds interesting. There's also Angelo's in midtown (coal oven). Nick's in Forest Hills is a major place we haven't visited yet. For that matter, there's Otto.

Hi Sam,

I think you and I are on the same page regarding Franny's = its not doable for more than six people. I've been to Angelo's - its good and I'd love to go again. I haven't been to the other places (Di Fara, Arturos) on this thread so I'm the last person for comparison. Nick's and Luzzo's also look good.

Still the restaurant the most have responded to has been Franny's and one hates to disappoint! So far we still have four so that's why we said, tentatively Franny's and if the group gets too large (or the group wants to go somewhere else) we go somewhere else, like Nick's or Luzzo's (I'm game for Angelo's if anyone else is).

Right now, my schedule is really variable - auditions have been cropping up at the rate of one or more a week, with very little notice, and I will be in and out of town all summer (two weddings to go to, and I have GOT to get some vacation "me" time in sometime!). For example, as of this morning I was available three nights next week. As of right now, I'm available exactly one, and I think I'm going to lock myself in my bedroom with the ferrets and a bottle of gin and refuse to talk to anyone or answer the phone that night.

So knock yerselves out...and if I can make it, I definitely will!

Indicate when you are available.

So where are we going? Maybe we should have a vote on that? I'll start off neutral.

If not Franny's; I would enjoy Nick's, can do Angelo's although I'd prefer something I haven't tried.

So far, we have confirmed for the 10th:

Pan,
myself
Jen

I think Emmapeel has confirmed but just waiting to hear back from her.

Tentative:
Bond Girl
wannabechef

Several expressed interest but had schedule conflicts with the 10th.

We could move it to the next weekend or if the group overwhelmingly wants Franny's I would be willing to organize two group trips there - one on the 10th and one later - perhaps the next weekend. It might be interesting to compare the results from the two groups. Don't know if its allowed under current rules, just thought I'd throw it out there. And yes, I love pizza

Dana, perhaps those of us who can go on the 10th should also indicate what other days/times we are available, in the interest of having the largest number of participants possible. Though that doesn't seem applicable to Franny's.

In terms of rules, the only issue would be whether the get-together is of a type likely to result in substantive food-related discussion. If that's true once, it can and should be true twice. In case there are two groups and one doesn't contain any eGullet stuff members, we can deal with that closer to the time, but it isn't a big issue at all.

You bring up a good point Michael. If we want to sample a lot of pies for the surveys a bigger group can handle it better. We don't want to bust the bank on our first pizza outing!

At a later date, we may want to pursue arranging something special with Franny's so we can bring a larger crowd - I don't think its undoable but after a couple of conversations I had, its going to take time and someone with more knowlegde than I have at the moment.

In the meantime, I took a look at Otto's site on Sam's recommendation and the pizza looks realy good. Especially the Bianca and Fennel. They also have the classic Marinara and Pepperoni so we can compare. What do you all think? It doesn't look too expensive-its in Manhattan and it takes reservations for parties up to 11.

The place I am dying to try is the newly opened Adrienne's, on Stone Street, from Nick Angelis of Forest Hills fame. He's trying to do a Umberto / Di Fara style Grandma pie and I want to see what he comes up with.

Ooh, Mr. Cutlets, what an intriguing suggestion :hmmm:

Pan, a quick Google search reveals Adrienne's is in Manhattan's Financial District.

I'll do two outings! I'll show up late! I'll repost my availability!

Weekday evenings after 7pm
Saturday lunch and dinner (i.e. just not between 3 and 6pm)
Sunday lunch (tho' Father's Day might present a conflict)

So tempting to call in sick to make an early dinner on the 10th, too bad I haven't any sick days left

This thread seems to be fading again. Obviously, nothing happened on the 10th. Shall we shoot for the 19th? The evening of the 18th or 17th? All look possible for me at the moment (but Father's Day is this coming Sunday, right?) The following weekend would look approximately the same for me. And the next question is, where? What shall we do, get a list of people who are available and then take a vote on where to go?

As it seems things seem to be running out of steam here, perhaps something centrally located, like DeMarco's. Has the survey been there yet? I was there but only ordered by the slice. Perhaps the pie would be better. Please excuse me if I am commiting a pizza faux pas by recommending this place. My only excuse is that I have not been to a Pizza survey gathering.

No, the survey hasn't been there, and no, you're not committing a faux pas, but if there are only two people still interested, that would not a survey make. So, anyone else still interested?
